Patination of Sculpture

The lights and darks that would normally occur as part of a sculptural form are often reversed through corrosion on pieces that have been placed out of doors.  Although the corrosion may be a natural process, it reflects the quality of the air in which the piece is situated.  Artists often cannot predict exactly how the piece will weather and therefore, left to the whims of nature, the pieces can become severely disfigured and difficult to read and enjoy.
  • Recchia's Baby and Frog Before Treatment

    • The sculpture is a well-loved piece from Rockport, MA that suffered from its environment near the ocean

    • The face was badly corroded and gave the piece a somewhat quizzical look.

Recchia's Baby and Frog is an example of a sculpture whose features had been reversed through corrosion of the metal to a bright green.  Areas that on a human would be bright, such as the cheek bones, forehead, hair, and upper shoulders were deep brown and hidden areas such as around the eyes and center of the chest were bright green.
  • Baby and Frog After Treatment

    • After repatination of the surface of the bronze

    • The lights and darks have been re-established in the treated piece.

SDACS LLC repatinated the piece using a chemical hot-torch method and coated it with both a lacquer and wax to reduce the possibility of corrosion in the future.  Examples of the artist in other collections was used to guide the choice of patina color.  The child is once again smiling.
